Atlantic Avenue Road Diet

About The Project

RVE provided traffic analysis and design engineering services for the Atlantic Avenue Road Diet Project. The goal of this project was to enhance multimodal transportation for all roadway users by working within the existing footprint of the roadway and to enhance safety and reduce speeding along Atlantic Avenue. This Road Diet Project included the investigation of the feasibility of converting the existing four-lane roadway to a three-lane roadway with a center median, center turn lane and left turn lanes. RVE’s traffic analysis determined a Road Diet to be a strong option for the City to enhance safety and reduce speeding along Atlantic Avenue. As the project moved to the design phase, RVE conducted public outreach to provide information regarding the proposed project. During the design phase, RVE worked with the City to ensure that the concerns of the community were considered for the final design. The Atlantic Avenue Road Diet project offered the City high-value improvements at the relatively low cost of striping and signage, providing the City with the ability to enhance multimodal safety within the footprint of the existing road with only pavement marking and signage modifications required. RVE worked to ensure construction was completed in time for the summer 2021 tourist season

No curb lines were changed and drainage impacts were avoided as RVE proposed a plan comprised of 100% pavement markings.

Whereas roadway reconstruction can be costly and time-consuming, the Road Diet provided the City with the ability to enhance multimodal safety within the footprint of the existing road with only pavement marking and signage modifications required.
