Brookdale Park Playground Replacement
The County of Essex (County) wanted to construct a new playground at Brookdale Park in the Townships of Montclair and Bloomfield, NJ. Utilizing a Conservancy Group of local residents, the County provided a number of features that needed to be included in the final project.
RVE was retained by the County to provide the engineering and inspection services for the construction of a new playground at Brookdale Park. Our firm immediately recognized the importance of working with the local Conservancy Group, which was a key component to the project’s success. The Conservancy Group conducted a survey of local residents, asking what components they wanted in the new park, and provided these results to RVE.
Utilizing this information, RVE was able to design a state-of-the-art facility that incorporates the historical components of the site with the desires of the local residents.
Among the items that needed to be included into the new playground design included:
- Being appealing to both boys and girls.
- Being ADA-compliant.
- Having a rubberized safety surface with designs and a complementing theme.
- Having separate areas for children from ages 2-to-5 and 5-to-12.
- Having duel-height drinking fountains.
- Having benches, trash receptacles, and signage.
This collaborative effort resulted in the design of an incredible nature-themed playground consisting of over 17,000 SF of poured-in-place rubber surfacing with an integral underdrain system; two large, age-appropriate, custom play structures; a large climbing net structure; swings; seating areas; drinking fountains; and a central “observation” area for parents.
